The environmental movement was born in the late 1960s and early 1970s in response to significant environmental problems facing the country. The country's first major environmental laws were adopted and government agencies were formed to carry out the laws. At the time, Ohio was known for a burning river, a dead lake and some of the dirtiest air in the nation. To address those and many other environmental issues, Ohio EPA was created on October 23, 1972.
Through a combination of government requirements, private sector investments, and individuals committed to environmental improvement, Ohio's environment has improved tremendously. This page takes you through the last 30 years of environmental protection efforts in Ohio. We hope you will learn a little, and be inspired to make a difference in your community.
