Ohio EPA Meeting to Discuss Proposed Biodigester

Virtual Public Information Session on April 8

Ohio EPA is considering an application for a wastewater permit-to-install (PTI) from Synthica Energy LLC for a proposed anaerobic digester in Cincinnati.

A virtual public information session about the application will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2021. During the meeting, Ohio EPA will give a short presentation about the project and answer questions from the public. Citizens who want to participate must register in advance of the meeting.

Synthica Energy LLC is proposing to construct an anaerobic digester at 5410 Vine St., Cincinnati. If approved, the facility would accept organic waste materials from area consumer products and food companies. The organic material would be treated in the digester to produce gas for electric generation.

If a permit is approved, the company could install the equipment needed to process and treat the organic material. Synthica Energy already has obtained an air permit for emissions from a boiler and on-site gas flare.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
