Ohio EPA Meeting Set for Wayne County Biosolids Lagoon

Information Session and Hearing Scheduled April 17, 2018

Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting to discuss a permit-to-install application for a biosolids storage facility in Wayne County’s Canaan Township.

An information session will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the Ohio Agriculture Research and Development Center (OARDC) Fisher Auditorium, 1680 Madison Ave., Wooster. A hearing will follow to provide an opportunity to submit public comments on the permit application.

Buckeye Biogas, LLC, is proposing to build a 10-million-gallon storage lagoon in Canaan Township east of the intersection of Friendsville and East Pleasant Home Road to store anaerobically digested biosolids from the company’s Wooster facility. The treated biosolids would later be land applied on Ohio EPA-approved sites.

Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the permit application through April 24, 2018. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. To comment or receive information on the permit application, write to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049 or email epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov. Please put the PTI permit number 1211412 on each comment sent.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
