Public Interest Center Rumpke Hydrogen Sulfide Information

Hydrogen sulfide is a naturally occurring flammable, colorless gas with a characteristic odor of rotten eggs. It is produced by bacterial breakdown of organic matter as well as human and animal wastes. People can smell it at low levels. For more information on H2S, please visit www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxfaqs/tf.asp?id=388&tid=67.

All values for hydrogen sulfide samples taken by the instantaneous equipment have been “non-detect.” A non-detect means that concentrations are lower than the sampling equipment can detect. The minimum detection level (MDL) for hydrogen sulfide on the portable monitor is 1 part per million (ppm). Any detection of hydrogen sulfide by the portable unit could indicate potential exposure.

Please click here to view instantaneous sample results on HCDOES's Web site.

Hamilton County Public Health has provided an interactive map of the results, but it will require that you download the Google Earth plug-in to view. If you do not  have this plug-in, you will be prompted to download it when you click the link above. If you do not wish to download the plug in, please contact HCDOES at (513) 946-7777 to make arrangements to see the data in another format.
