Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) is a clear plastic that is used to make 2-litre bottles for carbonated beverages as well as bottles for other consumer products such as dish detergent, ketchup, mouthwash, and many other products. PET is also used to make a host of other products including carpet, clothing, luggage, footwear, and strapping. Recycled products include: fiber, tote bags, bottles, clothing, furniture, carpet PET plastic is coded with the recyclable #1 PET or #1 PETE symbol shown here.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) refers to a plastic used to make bottles for milk, juice, water and laundry products. Recycled products include: liquid laundry detergent containers, drainage pipe, oil bottles, recycling bins, benches, pens, doghouses, floor tile, picnic tables, lumber, mailbox posts, fencing. HDPE plastic is coded with the recyclable #2 HDPE symbol shown here.
Vinyl (Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC) PVC has excellent chemical resistance, good weather resistance, flow characteristics and stable electrical properties. Vinyl products can be broadly divided into rigid and flexible materials. Bottles and packaging sheet are major rigid markets, but it is also used for pipes and fittings, siding, carpet backing and windows. Flexible vinyl is used in wire insulation, film , floor coverings, synthetic leather products, coatings, blood bags and medical tubing. Recycled products include: packaging, binders, decking, paneling, road-way gutters, mud flaps, film and sheet, flooring, cables, speed bumps and mats. PVC plastic is coded with the recyclable #3 V symbol shown here.
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) LDPE is used in film applications, flexible lids and bottles, wire and cable applications. Recycled products include: shipping envelopes, garbage can liners, floor tile, furniture, film and sheet, compost bins, paneling, trash cans, plastic landscape timbers and lumber. LDPE plastic is coded with the recyclable #4 LDPE symbol shown here.
Polypropylene (PP) Polypropylene is found in products such as flexible and rigid packaging as well as fibers and large molded parts for automotive and consumer products. Recycled products include: auto battery cases, signal lights, battery cables, brooms and brushes, ice scrapers, oil funnels, landscape borders, bicycle racks, rakes, bins, pallets, sheeting and trays. PP plastic is coded with the recyclable #5 PP symbol shown here.
Polystyrene (PS) Polystyrene can be rigid or foamed. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard and brittle. Products include protective packaging, containers, lids, cups, bottles and trays. Recycled products include: thermometers, light switch plates, thermal insulation, egg cartons, vents, desk trays, rulers, license plate frames, foam packing, carryout containers and spray foam insulation. PS plastic is coded with the recyclable #6 PS symbol shown here.
OTHER plastic: Other plastic indicates that the package in question is made with a resin other than the six listed above, or is made of more than one resin used in combination. Products include three and five gallon reusable water bottles as well as some citrus juice and ketchup bottles. Recycled products include: custom products and plastic lumber. OTHER plastic is coded with the recyclable #7 OTHER symbol shown here.
In the majority of industrial applications there is little or no difference between the quality of recycled plastic vs. virgin plastic. The Ohio EPA has provided this list of plastics marketers to help facilitate the collection and trade in post-consumer plastics.

Plastics Reclaimers - Purchase post-cunsumer or post-industrial plastics and produce clean flakes or pellets.
Plastic Recycling Facility - Receive or purchase post-consumer or post industrial plastics and produce bales or dirty regrind to be sent to a reclaimer.
Plastics Brokers - Buy and sell various forms of plastics in truckload quantities for resale. Brokers often sell to overseas markets.
