HDPE Bottle Recycling Markets (for
bottles originally containing motor oil)
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) that is contaminated with oil or other water insoluble material poses a special problem for recyclers. Quart-sized motor oil bottles and bottles which previously contained other automotive materials or additives are the most common source of this type of waste. Many curbside recycling programs still cannot accept emptied motor oil bottles for recycling. Currently very few plastic recyclers can handle this type of material.
The primary problem companies face when recycling these materials is the washing process and the permitting associated with the acompanying wastewater discharge. Some compounding processes can use limited amounts of oil comtaminated HDPE directly in a mix with non-contaminated plastics, but for most applications the material must be washed first.
The used oil container processors/handlers below were obtained from the American Plastics Council, and from the list of companies who have notified Ohio EPA as used oil container marketers. Each business was contacted for current status, confirmation on location and details on services offered. Please note that this list is only a partial representation of recyclers and is updated periodically. This list should not be seen as an endorsement or approval of the businesses by Ohio EPA. Users of this list are encouraged to research the compliance status of any business they utilize. If you wish to be added to the list, please contact the Division of Hazardous Waste Management (DHWM) or the

Assistance & Pollution Prevention in writing. You may also want to check the list of used oil recyclers.
The following plastics handlers and reclaimers have indicated that they accept High Density Polyethylene (HPDE) bottles that originally contained motor oil or similar substances. In some instances, these companies actively pursue the material whereas in others they will accept the material only if mixed in limited quantities with other HDPE material.
