What is Ohio Prevention First?Ohio Prevention First is the state of Ohio's volutary program to reduce pollution in Ohio by encouraging pollution prevention and reduction planning. Ohio Prevention First got its start when Governor George V. Voinovich challenged the "Top 100" copanies on Ohio'sToxic Release Inventory (TRI) to commit to comprehensive pollution prevneiton planning. Eighty-six of those 100 companies agreed to participate as well as 76 others not in the top 100. Today, 162 facilities are participating in Ohio Prevention First. Although Governor Voinovich originally requested the "Top 100" toxic chemical reporters to participate in this initiative, Ohio Prevention First was expanded to include all business and industry, local governments, community groups, schools and schools districts, and individuals. The goal of Ohio Prevention First is to reduce pollution in Ohio by 50% by the year 2000. Ohio Prevention First has three primary objectives. The first objective is to reduce the release of toxic chemicals and the amount of hazardous waste generated in Ohio by 50 percent by the year 2000. The second objective is to encourage facilities to initiate or expand existing pollution prevention or pollution reduction practices through development of comprehensive pollution prevention plans. And, the third objective of this initiative is to publicize exemplary pollution prevention or pollution reduction efforts. We strongly encourage you to consider participating in this voluntary program. The Ohio Prevention First initiative offers Ohio organizations a unique opportunity to demonstrate that real progress can be made in pollution prevention through voluntary efforts. The Ohio EPA Office of Pollution Prevention is working with statewide business and trade organizations to promote the Ohio Prevention First initiative. We encourage you to contact these organizations to find out more about this initiative. If you would like more information regarding the Ohio Prevention First initiative, please contact the Ohio EPA Office of Pollution Prevention (see below). |
The Office of Pollution Prevention was created to encourage multi-media pollution prevention activities in Ohio to reduce risk to public health, safety, welfare and the environment. Pollution prevention stresses source reduction and, secondarily, environmentally sound recycling while avoiding cross media transfers. The Office analyzes, develops, and publicizes information related to pollution prevention and increases awareness of pollution prevention opportunities via education, outreach, and technical assistance programs for business, government, and the public. For printed copies of this or other pollution prevention publications distributed by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Pollution Prevention, please call the Office of Pollution Prevention at (614) 644-3469.
A printed copy of the Office of Pollution Prevention publications distribution list, "Pollution Prevention Information Available from Ohio EPA", may also be ordered by calling (614) 644-3469.
