part of the Ohio EPA and Ohio Hospital
Association's Mercury Challenge Project. Fisher-Titus has held two exchanges in
Norwalk, one in New London and Wakeman. Almost 900 mercury thermometers have
been collected, $750 in donations and Fisher-Titus has reached 546 households.
The purpose of this program is to protect the health of local families and their
communities, reduce the risk of mercury contamination of the environment,
educate the public about the hazards of mercury and provide community members
the opportunity to be 'part of the solution', said Lisa Meyer, director of
environmental services at FTMC. Families are asked to collect all mercury-based
thermometers from their homes and bring them to the collection point where they
will be properly packaged and disposed. Each family will receive a free digital
thermometer from Fisher-Titus Medical Center. A $1 donation is requested to help
defray the cost of collection materials.
