Municipal Storm Water

What’s new?

The following was provided by Cuyahoga SWCD.

Non-point source pollution is caused by snowmelt or storm water runoff. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Essentially, storm water pollution is death by 1,000 cuts! Just like a solitary cut on your leg is not life-threatening, no single one of these sources by itself leads to water quality problems, but their cumulative effects are more than enough to degrade our rivers and streams. The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District’s rain barrel education program has put more than 1,000 rain barrels into the county over just a year and half. The goal is to put a proverbial band aid on the 1,000 cuts created by storm water pollution. One rain barrel isn’t enough to reverse the effect of storm water pollution but collectively they can make a difference. The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District will continue its rain barrel program into 2010 and incorporate a downspout diverter that was designed, created and produced in Cleveland! In addition, the district will feature composting workshops along with the rain barrel workshops and also have a Rain Barrel Art program that will feature local artists painting the barrels which will be displayed across the city and sold at the end of the year. For more information on the Cuyahoga SWCD rain barrel program or other education activities, contact Amy Roskilly, Conservation Education Coordinator at 216/524-6580, ext 22 or aroskilly@cuyahogaswcd.org
