WHAT IS AN SIC/NAICS CODE?

SIC stands for Standard Industrial Classification. SIC codes were developed by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census to collect, tabulate and analyze data by business type. SIC codes use a four-digit numbering system to classify a business by its primary activity.  For example: SIC code 7539 identifies "automotive repair shops" and SIC code 2521 identifies "wood office furniture manufacturing."

In 1997 the Bureau of Census replaced the SIC codes with North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).  Numbers identifying a business activity using the SIC codes are different from those using NAICS.

However, many environmental regulations continue to use the SIC codes to help determine what regulations apply to a particular business.  Many permit applications, registrations and reports require that the business be identified by its SIC code.

SIC and NAICS codes can be found at www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html.  If you need further assistance, give us a call at 800-329-7518.

HOW DO I FIND MY LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE?

If you do not have GPS receiver, there are two web sites that will give you the latitude and longitude for any address within the United States.  These are:

 Testdrive Eagle Geocoding from Etak/Tele
 Microsoft's TerraServer

The data are in decimal degrees. To convert to degrees/minutes/seconds, multiply the fractional part by 60 (to get minutes and fractional minutes), then multiply the fractional Minutes by 60 to get seconds (and fractional seconds).

For example: Ohio EPA’s Central District Office is located at

3232 Alum Creek Drive
Columbus, Ohio

Latitude 39.902529, Longitude -82.928945

The following shows how this decimal format is converted to degree/minute/second format.

Latitude:    39.902529 =
                   39 degrees 60(.902529) minutes =
                   39 degrees 54.15174 minutes =
                   39 degrees 54 minutes 60(.15174) seconds =
                   39 degrees 54 minutes 9 seconds =
                   39 degrees 54' 9"

Longitude:   -82.928945
                   -89 degrees 60(.902529) minutes =
                   -89 degrees 55.7367 minutes =
                   -89 degrees 55 minutes 60(.7367) seconds =
                   -89 degrees 55 minutes 44 seconds =
                   -89 degrees 55' 44"
