Ohio's Materials Exchange: A Statewide Recycling Service

CHEMICAL GRADE UREA - Success Story

Werner G. Smith in Cleveland, Ohio no longer had use for 7,700 lbs. of chemical grade urea used in producing a foundry resin catalyst for a core binder in casting molds.

The material was placed as an available chemical in OMEx during 2001. Werner G. Smith received several calls concerning the material, however, in some cases company regulatory policies prevented the exchange. The material was eventually purchased by Midwest Industrial Supply, Canton, Ohio.

Werner G. Smith successfully exchanged 7,700 lbs. of surplus materials and sold the material for approximately 10 cents per pound or $770. (Disposal costs were not calculated). Though the specific cost savings to Midwest Industrial Supply are confidential, they saved approximately 20% of their usual raw material and transportation costs. The entire exchange process took about two weeks to complete. Both companies were very pleased with the exchange.

If you are interested in more information on this project or if you desire assistance with your own specific material concerns, please contact OMEx technical assistant, Steve Shew at 888/718-OMEx (6639), ext. 7661.
