BRINE WASTE - Success Story
The Cargill Salt Company located in Cleveland Ohio produces approximately 6,000-18,000 gallons per day of brine waste from their mining operations. The liquid material is high in sodium and calcium content which can be used to neutralize acids. Cargill conducted a detailed chemical analysis and listed the waste product in the OMEx catalog. After several inquiries regarding its content and consistency, Gem Corp., also located in Cleveland, contacted Cargill and company representatives from both plants met to discuss the brine waste.
Gem Corporation agreed to sign a contract with Cargill Salt to transport approximately 10,000 gallons of brine per week beginning in 2001. Cargill does not charge for the brine and saves over $1,000 per week in disposal costs. Gem Corporation uses the brine in their oil recovery process that is eventually used as heating oil.
