Ohio's Materials Exchange: A Statewide Recycling Service

OMEx: Ohio’s Materials Exchange - What is it and How to use it

The primary purpose of OMEx is the dissemination of information on surplus and/or waste materials either available from or wanted by industrial and commercial entities. By facilitating the beneficial reuse of waste materials, OMEx assists in reducing the need for landfill space, and encourages the proper management of solid and hazardous waste in order to avoid adverse effects on the environment.

Twenty-three standard categories have been established for use in listing both materials available and materials wanted. Placing a listing or requesting contact information on a listing is easy and convenient through email, our website or fax-on-demand. OMEx services are free to all users.

A materials exchange program provides a mechanism for recycling and reusing unwanted materials. The exchange service provider maintains and distributes listings of materials available and materials wanted from participants. Through a materials exchange, one company’s “waste” can become another company’s raw material. Any material that is available from one business and potentially wanted by another can be a part of a materials exchange.

Ohio's Materials Exchange (OMEx) Website lists all materials, contact information (names, addresses and phone numbers of listers) and date listings were received.  The website is updated as new information arrives.

OMEx is not intended as a medium for advertising products and/or services.

    OMEx is sponsored by:

  • Coshocton, Fairfield, Licking, Perry Solid Waste District
  • Ohio Environmental Protection Agency
  • Ohio Department of Development
  • Ohio Department of Natural Resources
  • Stark, Tuscarawas, Wayne Solid Waste District
  • Wood County Solid Waste District

WHAT IS MATERIALS EXCHANGE?

The practice of material exchange is not new. However, many companies which have informally participated in exchanges of materials may not be aware that this service is available on a statewide level. This important method of networking can now be explored through directories or listings of materials on a statewide, regional and national scale.

A material exchange is a service which promotes the use of one company’s un-wanted material as another’s raw material. It is an information clearinghouse for available by-products, virgin products and other forms of unwanted industrial materials. A material exchange identifies both producers and markets for solid and hazardous materials.

WHAT MATERIALS WILL BE EXCHANGED?

Materials are classified by the components that best describe them. Classifications are provided in Listing Form (PDF document).

WHO SHOULD USE THIS SERVICE?

  • Companies that have surplus products or raw materials
  • Companies that manufacture by-products and wish to determine their marketability
  • Companies that have off-specification or obsolete manufactured products, raw materials or equipment
  • Companies looking for ways to minimize disposal costs
  • Companies that have material that can be used in another company’s process
  • Companies interested in reducing raw material costs by using “cast-off” materials as production inputs
  • Local governments and recycling collection centers looking for better market outlets and prices for collected recyclables
  • Businesses/entrepreneurs who want a barometer of waste markets.

HOW DOES AN EXCHANGE WORK?

A material exchange matches companies having unwanted, usable materials with companies that have need for the materials. This is done by publishing lists of both available and wanted materials in accordance with the classifications on the Listing Form. Listings describe the material, quantity and form available, and indicate geographic location. Names of the suppliers of the materials are not provided in the listing. The OMEx reference document and bimonthly addendums have coded entries and a brief description of the materials. Using the coded entry, users call the fax on demand system to obtain contact information.

The potential user contacts the company offering the material to obtain specific chemical/physical information, to arrange for purchase or exchange, and trans- portation. OMEx does not take part in company-to-company discussions or the actual shipment of the materials. OMEx is free of charge.

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER EXCHANGE?

YES, if you have surplus, obsolete, off-specification and other unwanted materials, or your manufacturing processes are not dependent upon the use of virgin materials. Material exchanges can result in cost savings to both donor and receiver. The donor avoids the costs of disposal, and the receiver obtains raw material at substantially lower price per pound or gallon.

New Phone Number for Fax-on-Demand

In order to streamline the fax-on-demand system and allow our operators to efficiently update information, we have changed the fax-on-demand number from 800/317-4797 to the new number: 888/718-OMEx (6639). So please remember, the ONLY number you need for information on Ohio's Materials Exchange and fax-on-demand is 888/718-OMEx (6639). Instructions for using the system are very similar as before. Thank you for your patience.

Using the OMEx fax retrieval system makes the listing contact information available 24 hours a day. Here's how:

1. Write down the five-digit listing code number for each listing you would like to contact. For example:

A03-21
VARIOUS LABORATORY CHEMICALS
Unopened chemicals. Call for full listing. OH

would be coded: A03-21=20321 on your phone's keypad.

2. From most any touch tone phone, dial 888/718-OMEx (6639). You will hear "Thank you for calling OMEx...." Interactive voice commands will provide detailed instructions. When prompted, enter the 5 or 6 digit number for the listing. Substitute "2" for "A": and "9" for "W" in the listing code. In the example above, you would enter "20321." After entering each request, press the # key.

3. When you are finished ordering contact information for the listings you are interested in (up to a limit of 5 per call) the system will ask for your fax and phone numbers.

4. Immediately, the listing you have requested will be sent to your fax machine. If the line is busy, the fax retrieval system makes two more attempts to fax your documents.
