Division of Solid and Infectious Waste Management

District staff in the Division of Solid and Infectious Waste Management perform the following duties:

  • Oversee and provide assistance to solid and infectious waste disposal programs managed by local health departments.
  • Review permit applications for new and expanding solid, residual and infectious waste facilities.
  • Inspect solid waste landfills, incinerators and transfer facilities; composting facilities; infectious waste treatment facilities, generators and transporters; waste tire facilities; and construction/demolition debris disposal sites.
  • Investigate complaints of illegal dumping.
  • Review local solid waste management plans and assist counties in implementing the plans.
  • Oversee construction of new and expanding solid and infectious waste disposal facilities to ensure compliance with permit requirements.
  • Initiate enforcement actions for violations of regulations.
  • Review solid waste landfill closure plans.
  • Review methane monitoring plans for landfills.
  • Provide technical assistance to the regulated community and the public.
