Division of Materials and Waste Management Generator Requirements

Understanding Hazardous Waste Generator Requirements

Any person who generates a waste (other than a household) must determine if the waste meets the definition of a hazardous waste. If the waste is hazardous, the generator must store, treat, transport and dispose of their hazardous waste according to Ohio’s hazardous waste rules.

For help determining if you generate hazardous waste, these guidance documents will be helpful:
The requirements a generator must comply with depends on the amount of hazardous and acute hazardous waste generated each month and the total amount of hazardous and acute hazardous waste he has on-site at one time. There are three categories of hazardous waste generators. They are often referred to as conditionally exempt small quantity generators (CESQG), small quantity generators (SQG) and large quantity generators (LQG).

The following estimates will vary according to the density of the waste.
1 kg ≈ 1 qt
100 kg ≈ 27 gal (about ½ of a 55-gallon drum) or 220 lbs
1,000 kg ≈ 270 gal (about five 55-gallon drums) or 2,200 lbs
6,000 kg ≈ 1,620 gallons (about thirty 55-gallon drums) or 13,200 lbs

Note: Accumulation times vary according to generator status. Generation starts the moment a material is discarded.
