Former Holland Axle Products – Delphos
On January 7, 2011 the Director of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) issued as a final action Director’s Final Findings and Orders (DFFOs) to SAF Holland USA, Inc. (formerly known as Holland-Binkley Company) of Holland, Michigan, and to Langhals Enterprises LLC, of Delphos, Ohio, to implement source control/ground water interim actions (SCIA) at the former Holland Axle Products property located at 1125 Spencerville Road, Delphos, Allen County, Ohio. The parties have consented to the administrative Orders and have agreed to perform the SCIA work.
The DFFOs require the following actions: the determination of the extent of contamination in soil and ground water at the site, and the development, evaluation, design and implementation of interim actions to control the identified source areas of contamination. The DFFOs also require reimbursement of Ohio EPA's past and future response costs incurred in connection with the Site. To view a copy of the DFFOs, click here.
Former Joy Mining Machinery – New Philadelphia
On January 4, 2011 the Director of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) issued as a final action Director’s Final Findings and Orders (DFFOs) to Joy Mining Machinery (Joy) of Warrendale, Pennsylvania and Howden Buffalo, Inc. (Howden) of New Philadelphia, OH to implement a ”remedial design and remedial action” (RD/RA) at the former Joy and current Howden Site located at 338 South Broadway, New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio (Site). Joy and Howden have consented to the administrative Orders and have agreed to perform the RD/RA work.
The DFFOs require the following actions: development and implementation of an RD/RA work plan; continuance of efforts to remove contaminants from environmental media outlined in the Decision Document; and associated reporting. Former Marathon Oil Bulk Plant - Fremont
On December 16, 2010, the Director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) issued as a final action Director’s Final Findings and Orders (DFFOs) to Marathon Oil Company of Findlay, Ohio to implement a ”remedial decision and remedial action” (RD/RA) at the former Marathon Oil Bulk Plant located at 2300 West State Street, Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. Marathon has consented to the administrative Orders and to perform the RD/RA work.
The DFFOs require the following actions: performance of an RD/RA work plan for monitored natural attenuation (i.e., a ground water monitoring and evaluation program); well abandonment; development of a risk management plan for protection of construction and excavation workers; the recording of an environmental covenant to establish activity and use limitations for the site; and associated reporting. Hilltop/Toth Landfill - Canfield
On April 15, 2010, the Director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) issued as a final action Director’s Final Findings and Orders to Browning-Ferris Industries of Ohio, Inc., of Phoenix, Arizona, to George and Patricia Kyprianou of Canfield, Ohio, and to the Arthur A. and Margaret Catherine Horvath Revocable Trust, of Richmond, Virginia, to implement a remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) at the Hilltop/Toth Landfill located on Canfield Road, Canfield, Ellsworth Township, Mahoning County, Ohio.
The Director’s Final Findings and Orders require the following actions: an investigation of the nature and extent of releases of contamination; an assessment of the risk to human health and the environment; and, the development and evaluation of potential remedial alternatives. U.S. Department of Energy (Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant) - Piketon
On April 13, 2010, the Director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) issued as a final action Director’s Final Findings and Orders (DFFOs) to the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to implement the Decommissioning and Decontamination (D&D) Project at the DOE Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant located in Piketon, Pike County, Ohio.
The DFFOs require the following actions: 1) engineering evaluation/cost analysis (EE/CA) and removal actions for certain structures and buildings, 2) remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) and remedial design/remedial action (RD/RA) for certain process buildings and complex structures, and 3) site-wide waste disposition evaluation.
