Central District Office Elemental Mercury Collection Program

Elemental Mercury Collection Program

The objective of the Elemental Mercury Collection Program is to reduce the amount of elemental mercury in local communities throughout Ohio by collecting mercury and mercury-containing devices (thermometers, thermostats, etc.) from residents, schools, health care facilities, businesses and other locations where mercury might be found. Removing these sources of mercury will also reduce the risk of mercury releases into the environment.

The program is a joint endeavor among Bowling Green State University, Rader Environmental Services, Ohio EPA and other local governmental agencies. Once collected the mercury is taken to Bowling Green State University for recycling.

Individuals having mercury for collection should contact Mike Dalton at 614-728-3823. He will provide instructions for packaging the mercury and make arrangements to collect the mercury. Only elemental mercury and mercury-containing devices will be accepted. Mercury containing visible contaminants such as dirt, gravel, water, etc. will not be accepted.

Mercury spills should be reported to the Ohio EPA Release Reporting Hotline at 1-800-282-9378.
