Ohio EPA Accepting Comments About Discharges to Long Run, Captina Creek Tributary

Hearing set for 6 p.m. Sept. 1, 2016

Ohio EPA will hold an information session followed by a public hearing as part of the Agency’s review of an application from Century Mine. If approved, the permit would set discharge limits for storm water at an expansion of the mine refuse disposal area located at 43521 Mayhugh Hill Road, Beallsville. The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2016, at the Beallsville Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 52125 Township Road 134, Beallsville.

Currently, ponds collect water that pools from the disposal area. If the applicant expands the facility, new ponds will collect rainwater and snow melt and would discharge in different locations than the existing ponds. Limits on pollutants in wastewater discharges are established to protect people’s health and the environment. The application addresses those pollutants and the amount of water allowed to be discharged.

The application and supporting documents may be reviewed by appointment at Ohio EPA’s Southeast District Office, 2195 Front St., Logan, (740) 385-8501.

Ohio EPA values public input. Verbal or written comments may be presented at the hearing. Written comments will be accepted until the close of business on Sept. 8. Comments may be sent by email to epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov, or by mail to Ohio EPA-DSW Permits Processing, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
