Ohio EPA Awards $5,000 Environmental Education Mini Grant to City in Mahoning County
Ohio EPA has awarded a $5,000 Environmental Education mini grant to the City of Lowellville to fund a “Mahoning River on Display” project. Nine projects throughout the state were funded for $36,589.
The grant funding will provide interpretive signage and informational flyers regarding the environmental benefits of the Mahoning River Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program (WRRSP) loan for dam removal in the Village of Lowellville.
Benefits include removal of sediment, restoration of natural stream flow and improvement of water quality and warm water aquatic habitat. A sign will be used to explain the dam site history, and flyers will be distributed by the Village, local businesses and schools to local residents and visitors.
The Eastgate Regional Council of Governments and Lowellville Board of Education are collaborating.
The Ohio Environmental Education Fund provides funding each year for environmental education projects targeting kindergarten through university students, the general public and the regulated community. For additional information, visit the Ohio Environmental Education Fund or call (614) 644-2873.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
