Ohio EPA To Hold Cytec Hazardous Waste Permit Renewal Hearing
Ohio EPA is considering a hazardous waste permit renewal for Cytec Industries (Cytec) and will hold an information session and public hearing at 6 p.m., Aug. 12, 2014, at the Marietta Public Library Meeting Room, 615 Fifth St., Marietta.
Hazardous waste permits in Ohio are subject to renewal every 10 years. Cytec’s permit incorporates remedial measures that the company has implemented to clean up contamination left by previous activities.
Issuance of the permit can be appealed to the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC). Appeals generally must be filed within 30 days of issuing the final action; therefore, Ohio EPA recommends that anyone wishing to file an appeal contact ERAC at (614) 466-8950.
Written comments are given the same weight as those presented through oral testimony and must be received by Aug. 25, 2014. Written comments should be mailed to: Scott Hester, Ohio EPA, Division of Materials and Waste Management, Authorizing Actions and Engineering Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
