Ohio EPA Awards Nearly $5,000 Environmental Education Mini Grant To City of Delaware for Watershed Festival

Ohio EPA has awarded a $4,923 environmental education mini grant to the city of Delaware for a watershed festival. Nine projects throughout the state were funded for $35,192.

The grant will provide supplies, an educational kiosk and printing for the city to conduct its first-ever watershed festival celebrating the Upper Olentangy River Watershed on June 21, 2014, at Mingo Park. Collaborating organizations, local nonprofits and volunteers will provide games and activities such as macroinvertebrate sampling as an indicator of water quality. There will be learning stations on topics such as sediment controls, rain barrels, rain garden design and construction, the role of plants in water filtration and the impact of dams on water quality.

The city expects to attract at least 500 residents the first year and continue the event annually. Collaborators include the Delaware Soil and Water Conservation District, Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed, Keep Delaware County Beautiful and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Scenic River Program.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund awards funding each year for environmental education projects targeting kindergarten through university students, the general public and the regulated community. For more information, visit the Ohio Environmental Education Fund, or call (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
