Public Meeting to Discuss Proposed Revisions to Tiffin Wastewater Discharge Permit

Information Session and Hearing Scheduled Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting to discuss proposed modifications to the wastewater discharge permit and long-term control plan for the city of Tiffin.

An information session will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the Tiffin-Seneca Library Community Room, 77 Jefferson St. A hearing will immediately follow the information session.

The city is working to reduce discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs). A compliance schedule included in the wastewater treatment plant discharge permit sets milestones for completing CSO elimination projects. While surveying the sewage system, the city discovered three additional CSO outfalls. The permit modification, if approved, would add the additional CSOs to the discharge permit.

The revised permit also would extend the long-term control plan timeline for the city to finish construction to July 2040. The city expects to have most of the work completed within the first 12 years, reducing the volume of CSO discharges by 89 percent in that first phase.

Comments may be presented at the April 12 hearing, or submitted in writing to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049; or by email: dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov. The public comment period will end April 19, 2017. Following consideration of public comments, Ohio EPA will decide on the application.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
