Ohio EPA Announces Program to Develop Common-Sense Regulations
for Disposal and Beneficial Use of Industrial Waste
One of Ohio EPA’s priorities is to "develop common-sense regulations for industrial waste." These rules will address disposal and beneficial use options specifically for non-hazardous, non-radioactive industrial wastes, generated from manufacturing/industrial processes. Other wastes generated by industries such as construction demolition debris, office wastes and cafeteria wastes are not included in this initiative.
The development of the rules is divided between two workgroups with the following major objectives.
-
Creating a more flexible, common-sense approach for regulating non-hazardous industrial wastes, both in terms of disposal and beneficial use options, particularly for wastes that present a minimal hazard to public health and the environment.
-
Developing a regulatory framework for a consistent approach in how non-hazardous industrial wastes are regulated between Ohio EPA’s Division of Solid and Infectious Waste Management (for dry ISW) and Division of Surface Water (for wet ISW).
